Emily Shea

Emily walked into her first yoga class and announced "I am not a yoga person." Given that she was a busy mom of three and a corporate litigation attorney, weighed well over 200 pounds and could not reach her feet for bow pose, this was not an unreasonable declaration. But ninety minutes later, she was ready to reevaluate. Even from that first class, where so much was new and unfamiliar, where so much was physically impossible and unfathomable, something grabbed her in a way that nothing ever had.

"For the rest of that day, I told everyone - friends, family, other moms in the schoolyard: 'I did the most amazing thing today.' I couldn't quite explain why it was amazing and didn't even have the words to describe what I had done, but right from the start, I sensed that something profound had shifted in my body, in my being."

There was not a great deal of space in Emily's life to be grabbed in such a way. But such is the magic of yoga. Shortly after that dawning realization that "maybe I am a yoga person after all," the small firm where she was working disbanded, and with the support of her husband, she decided to take some time to be a stay-at-home mom and practice a whole lot of yoga. Along the way, she dropped about seventy pounds, and uncovered a fuller, richer experience of herself.

Emily is blessed to have grown into yoga with the Cambridge studio close by, and with Baron and the teachers there her guides. She began teaching in 2003, and has slowly and joyfully watched the process unfold. She seeks in her teaching to stay grounded in the every day world we're all making our way through, and inspired by the transformational power that yoga holds for all of us.

"Baptiste yoga is not a retreat to a mountain top. It is real world, real life, real me, real you. And its power lies in the fact that right here, right now, you have everything you need to tap into the full depth and richness of your life. Whether you think you are a 'yoga person' or not."
